Chicago dispatch reports the first prelim to the famed beer trust cases opened before Judge J Otis Humphrey. Ten special pleas faced by packers must be resolved by jury trial before indictments proceed, drawing a large audience and heavy legal talent.
Disjointed dispatches report chaos as Cossack forces arrest agitators in Russia while mutinies flare in Harbin and Moscow. A general strike spreads through Russia with authorities threatening to call mass action. In Japan mutineers torch houses and seize weapons as streets fill with casualties. A separate note records the death of John H Mitchell at a Philadelphia hospital after a hemorrhage and failed recovery efforts.
Thursday December reports unfold with twenty two patients under care in Havana while notable figures face illness and death. Cleveland industrialist William Chisholm Sr dies of apoplexy as William H. Thompson eyes critical decline. An heiress from New York ties to British peerage in London.

Market quotes show Minneapolis wheat for December and May around 82% to 86% cents, flax at $1.01 to $1.05, and on track prices. St Paul stock yards report cattle up to $5.50, hogs around $4.25 to $4.70, sheep to $6.00, and lambs up to $7.25. Chicago markets list cattle and hog ranges, with wheat near 86% for December and 88% for May, plus corn and oats figures and butter and egg defaults.
Midshipman Minor Meriwether Jr was acquitted of manslaughter after a navy court martial. He was found guilty of two lesser charges under article eight for fighting and conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline. He received confinement to the academy limits for one year and a public reprimand by the secretary of the navy.
Thomas F. Ryan told an Insurance investigating committee that J P Morgan ally William K. Harriman pressed for a half share in Equitable Life control and warned of influence in possible legislation. Ryan said Harriman sought two of five trustees and that he refused to disclose private talks. Harriman did not secure stock. investigation also heard Us Senator Dryden note Prudential donations to GOP campaigns in 1896 1900 and 1904.
Edward Atkinson a well known social and political economist of the city died suddenly after an attack of acute indigestion. He was seventy eight and for forty years an authority on economic questions. He served public duties including a 1887 appointment by President Cleveland as special commissioner on bimetallism in Europe.
Chicago reports from the Lake Marine News bureau show 215 deaths on the Great Lakes this past season, the heaviest on record. The 1904 season had only 49 deaths, the smallest figure in history.
