Texas City Megaport nears permit after record of decision
Texas City moves toward opening the Texas City International Container Terminal also known as the Megaport. The Corps of Engineers released a record of decision outlining conditions to issue the construction permit after city officials sign off. Mayor Carlos Garza said a signed decision could come next Tuesday if conditions on air and water quality traffic mitigation and dredge material use are met. The plan includes using dredged material to restore Swan Lake and to build containment cells as the channel is widened to accommodate larger ships. If approved work could begin in late summer or early fall with six container decks and a new flyover on Interstate 45 plus an access road to Shoal Point. The project began in 1968 and aims to create economic opportunity for the Gulf Coast.
