Tablet honoring Catholic founder unveiled in London church
A tablet for George Calvert first Lord Baltimore and Maryland founder was unveiled at St Dunstans Church in London where he is buried. Calvert secured Maryland’s charter with religious freedom but died before the royal seal. His sons led settlers aboard Ark and Dove and Jesuit Father Andrew White said the first Mass in Maryland. Protestant rule later disenfranchised Catholics, yet Charles Carroll signed the Declaration, with Father Charles Carroll later consecrated Baltimore’s first bishop in England.
