The diocesan leader states the need for at least fifty new priests to staff expanding parishes and to lead specialized programs. He emphasizes vocations, urgently plans new parishes, and calls for canon lawyers educators welfare leaders and journalists to guide the diocese.
The quarter meeting of the Sherman Deanery Council of the National Council of Catholic Women in Muenster featured the visit of Most Rev. Thomas K. Gorman coadjutor to the Dallas bishop. He praised the council for rapid progress and noted its five year achievements as substantial as those of groups in thirty years. The program included talks by Rev. Walter Bojniewicz on libraries and literature and Rev. Erbrick on vocations.
St Josephs Church hosts a Bible Week exhibit September 28 to October 5 commemorating the 550th anniversary of the Gutenberg Bible. John Howard Griffin, a 32 year old blind man from near Mansfield, converts to Catholicism and writes about his life. He aims to publish a novel set in a French Benedictine monastery titled The Devil Rides Outside. Griffin, born in Dallas in 1920, refuses disability pay and farms livestock while pursuing sacred music studies and Catholic faith.
The book argues Shakespeare embraced Catholicism, citing 197 passages across plays and poems. It links Catholic doctrine to scenes of grace purgatory penance saints relics and sacred rites. The authors note Shakespeare’s marriage before a priest as a key personal clue.
American Fifth Army soldiers assisted at a cornerstone ceremony for a Catholic boys town nursery and welfare center at Pontecagnano near Salerno. The Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame, was named to the Ford Motor Company Fund Scholarship Board. The nine member board advises on scholastic matters and selects winners of the Fund’s annual scholarship competition for Ford employees’ children.
Manila on October 9 reports a large welcoming crowd of twenty two archbishops bishops and diplomats greeted Papal Nuncio Egidio Vagnozzi back from six months in Rome. He and the Philippine hierarchy then led officials and thousands to St Augustine Church where a Te Deum was sung.
