Samuel Biography and Sacred Call Overview

Samuel, son of Hannah and Elkanah, belonged to the tribe of Levi through the priestly line. He prayed at Shiloh’s shrine where his mother sought divine favor. The priest at the shrine was Eli. Samuel was dedicated as a Nazirite at birth. Hannah’s song echoed in the temple praising God, and Eli’s sons were corrupt priests. Samuel was tending the lamp when God called him. He was a prophet of the Lord. The Israelites asked Samuel for a king to judge them. Saul was anointed as the first king, from the tribe of Benjamin. David, the second king, was later anointed by Samuel. Samuel’s birthplace was Ramathaim Zophim in the land of Ephraim. Samuel’s ghost was conjured by the witch of Endor. Those who Samuel’s ghost said would kill Saul were the elders of Israel and certain enemies in the region.
