Sculptures Discovered From St Louis Gifts in Nazareth
Two eighth century sculptures sent by St Louis of France in the 13th century were found in Nazareth Israel. One shows a Virgin kneeling in prayer the other a high relief with angels and religious figures probably carved in Burgundy. They were part of a group intended for Nazareth Basilica restoration but were hidden when Saracens retook the city. Some statues survived hidden in Jerusalem with others later found in the 19th century.
