Rising floodwaters reach unprecedented levels with expectations that last year’s inundation will be exceeded. Officials warn a frightful loss of property is likely as waters surge toward record heights.
Cincinnati reports a swollen river at 59 feet and rising rapidly as heavy rains persist. Rivers and streams across the basin threaten property and business, with depots and rail lines adjusted to the flood. Distillery warehouse and cattle pens were damaged or swept away as officials move goods to higher ground.
River rises rapidly with 4 inches per hour near the canal and 3 inches elsewhere. At 33 feet 10 inches by the canal marks, 31 feet 10 inches on the falle, boats lay up and wharf space is scarce above Third street. Rain continues as residents anticipate a greater flood than before. The rainbow left for Henderson and the Ben Franklin is laid up.
Railways entering Cleveland report very high water at various points and damage. A major washout on the Cleveland and Pittsburg at Waynesburg. The Bee line flooded south for 15 miles. The Cuyahoga river overflow affects the upper state. Depots submerged and bridges washed away at Canal Dover and Elyria on the Cleveland Lorain and Wheeling.
The river is at 40 feet and rising 10 inches per hour. Low streets on the island and south of Wheeling Creek are submerged as homes are surrounded or invaded. A flood equal to the 1832 event is feared. residents abandon houses and merchants move stock. Mills and factories halt due to rising water and gas is shut off on the island.
Carao Feb 6 heavy rain since 4 p m yesterday causes the Ohio River to rise rapidly signaling rising flood concerns in the area.
The report notes a rise to over 8 feet in the last 24 hours and mentions 36 sites measuring 7 inches by gauge as the Mississippi River rises slowly.

One presumed suicide and unknown man drowned in the Monongahela near Shortene.
In Millersburg area a German farm laborer shot Mary Shuster, daughter of a widow he worked for, after she refused his attentions. He then shot himself. Mary Shuster survived but was not expected to recover.
Judge Henry Cooper once a U S Senator from Mexico was killed by robbers near Culiacan yesterday with no details released. Other items report Oscar E. Blaney confessing to a murder, Mrs Mary Lewis slain in Bridgeport, and a series of poisoning and shooting incidents across New England and Michigan.

Washington Feb 4 Representative Morrison completed and introduced a tariff bill in the House setting a 20 percent reduction on many duties while preserving limits. Boston February 4 funeral services for Wendell Phillips will be held at Fanueil Hall in the latter part of the week with no day set. The autopsy reveals a terrible disease caused his death and his apparent fortitude amid suffering is noted.

Eugene Rouher of Paris died at 9 this morning after several hours of unconsciousness. Prince Napoleon had visited him earlier. Ex Empress Eugenie telegrammed condolence to his widow. Rouher had been in critical condition for three days before death. Six
Washington reports a new bankruptcy bill, the Lowell bill with amendments, to be sent to the Senate this week. It lowers entry debt to 250 dollars and exempts 1000 dollars of property. The measure, drawn with bankers and merchants, seeks to curb abuses while allowing honest business people relief.
London February reports the Queen's Speech pledging continued cordial ties with foreign powers. France Madagascar relations, Newfoundland fisheries talks with the US, Portugal Congo accord, Spain commerce treaty, and Korea friendship pact cited. Egypt evacuation reversals and Ireland reforms urged.
London reports in the House of Commons that General Baker Pasha’s army suffered a serious defeat near Tokan. Baker’s force of 3,500 saw about 2,000 killed or wounded as the Turks and Europeans fought well before Baker retreated toward Suakim aboard the Ranger.
Alvan Berger died this morning at City Hospital following his stabbing at the machine shop on January 30. Charles Meyer, the other victim, had died days earlier. Charles Koebel, the engineer, remains jailed to answer for double murder.

Robbers are suspected after torturing him with fire to locate money, leaving three sets of tracks around the house. No suspects named but community fears lynching if killers are caught.
Andrew Johnson, a young Dane in Racine Wisconsin, entered a restaurant and shot Bertha Brissman after she refused him. He then killed himself by a pistol blast. A second shot at August Gulbranson failed to injure him. a letter on Johnson showed premeditation.
Wabash Feb 5 A bold express robbery on the Eel river road Sep 27 left messenger Bert Loomis bound and gagged with $2000 missing. Three masked men committed the deed. Detectives failed until Oct 1 when Thomas Furlong of St Louis sent two men to aid. Furlong and W K Bressie arrested D W Downer in Detroit, then S G Stepp and Harry Johnson were captured in Indianapolis. Both prisoners are jailed. a third robber is believed in Windsor Canada awaiting capture.
Washington February 5 Representative Hammond introduces a constitutional amendment to create a President and three Vice Presidents each serving equal terms. The first VP would preside over the Senate, with the second and third acting in case of presidential removal. If the President is removed the next VP assumes the presidency. The Senate would elect a president pro tempore if only one VP remains. Congress may specify a successor to the third VP when they lose the chair.
In Vincennes Indiana E J Lind say is jailed in Princeton charged with raping his thirteen year old daughter. Reports say a Petersburg mob may travel to Princeton to lynch him. Lindsay traveled with his daughter from Pike county to Oakland and lodged at the Kimball Hotel. That night the child cried out and the father fled the bed while the daughter recounted the assault. A physical exam supported her testimony. Lind had been a local justice of the peace and had good standing. He was jailed after failing to post $800 bond.
