Collision on Auburn branch railroad kills and injures many

Rochester July 19 A railroad accident near Pittsford on the Auburn branch caused by a defective journal delayed a coal train bound west and a passenger train at 10 10 a m colliding. The passenger engine mounted the coal engine and the baggage car and smoking coach were telescoped. Many passengers were killed or wounded. Two killed include Mrs Miles of Railroad Mills and Mr B Smith of Detroit and an unknown man. Three fatally injured and seven slightly hurt. John Barker the passenger engine driver sprained ankle, his fireman son injured, and the coal train engineer sprained ankle.

Attempted assassination of King and Queen of Spain

Maprro July 19 midnight attackers fired on the royal carriage. One assailant killed, two captured. Kings and Queens untouched, crowd excitement high as they return to the palace. Madrid buzzes with indignation and support for the royals as the Ministry and authorities receive deputations. King Amadeus to visit Santander tomorrow.

Fort Butler fracas sparks Egyptian inquiry in Alexandria

In Alexandria on July 17 the military commission probes the Butler incident involving Consul General Butler, Wadleigh, Strologo and Egyptian officers. Butler may have departed for the United States as tensions surge over the street brawl that left Major Campbell wounded. Generals Loring and Reynolds and Major Campbell were also present.

Wilson in Wilmington declares party lines over principles

Henry Wilson addressed a Wilmington crowd largely colored, arguing the race is about principles not men. He warned that voting for Greeley defeats the Republican party and aimed to win North Carolina to influence the national contest. He recalled long public life and asserted honesty toward all, noting grant era theft noted as minimal by figures.

Pickett reveals sale of Confederate archives

JOHN T. PICKETT, former Confederate diplomatic agent for Mexico, states the Confederate State Department archives were sold for 75000. The four trunks carried the full archives to the Executive Mansion on the third of the month. Secret service vouchers were destroyed in Richmond as the papers were delivered.

Postmaster Assistant in Indianapolis Charged with Defalcation

Indianapolis July 19 a defalcation in the account of J T Wood Assistant Post Master amounting to four thousand to five thousand dollars has been discovered Wood has been arrested and gave bail for his appearance for trial.
