Former Israeli rider Hugo Seinfeld, 34, is held on $25,000 bond as a material witness in the suspected poisoning death of Avis Gray, 25. Gray died after a cyanide and champagne cocktail Seinfeld made a farewell date at a West Side hotel allegedly ending their troubled relationship.
In Clay Kentucky white parents urged a boycott to protest National Guardsmen enforcing integration at the hilltop school. Two Negro children enrolled, aided by guards, as officials vowed to keep the school segregated after troops depart. Attendance remained sparse amid ongoing tension.
Secretary of State Dulles said the United States would not shoot its way through the Suez Canal if Egypt blocks passage. The U S would divert ships around Africa and may offer dollar loans to friendly nations. Egypt protests the plan and calls for peace while Eden urges a Western led users association.
Indiana candidates Tucker and Handley told the Indiana Municipal League they oppose a proposed 0.5 percent increase in the gross income tax to aid cities and towns. Both favor abolishing the 15 cent property tax to boost municipal revenue and keep state taxes away from cities. Indiana's 1956 polio case total rose to 204 with 19 new cases in the past week per the State Board of Health. The figure trails last year's 260 at the same date and is the lowest since 1951 with no new deaths on record, while seven other polio deaths are reported in counties.
Prof. A M Low, famed designer of the first guided missile, died in London at age 88. His work in rocketry and aviation during the early 20th century established him as a pioneer in guided weaponry.
Adlai E. Stevenson prepared his campaign kickoff speech with running mate Estes Kefauver denouncing Republican farm policies. Stevenson will deliver a 30 minute speech on national networks and radio from the Farm Show Building as 5,000 to 10,000 people attend a $50 plate dinner to hear him.
Joseph E. Smith former Oakland mayor accepted an appointment as Alameda county chairman of the Stevenson Kefauver campaign, aligning with Democrats in Oakland California. Joe Smith, known for Republican ties, moves to lead party efforts in the county.

Vigo County Tax Adjustment Board reviewed tax levies in Nevins Linton Prairie Creek and Prairieton Townships. Nevins' levy reduced by 1.5 cents and Linton by 1 mill, leaving Nevins at 2.36 and total rate 2.475. Prairie Creek and Prairieton unchanged though they rose over last year. Board plans further reviews of Lost Creek Seelyville Riley Pierson Otter Creek and West Terre Haute on Friday and Fayette Sugar Creek on Saturday.
A mass of warm air moved northeast through Indiana sending temperatures toward the 90s. Central and southern Hoosierland faced three more hot days with Friday and Saturday forecast as partly cloudy and hot. Evansville peaked at 94 while Fort Wayne and South Bend reached the mid to high 80s.
A tropical storm located about 500 miles off the Florida coast rapidly intensified toward hurricane strength of 75 mph. Storm Ethel, fifth tropical system of the season, posed no immediate U S threat. A hurricane hunter aircraft found its center east of West Palm Beach, moving northeastward toward open sea. Dora faded in Mexico after causing 13 deaths in Tuxpan.
Maj. Gen. Edson Burns, U.N. truce chief, called on Jordan and Israel to halt border incidents amid the Suez crisis. Jordan sources say 1,000 Israelis in trucks and armored cars seized a police post, killing 20 Jordanians in a two hour battle. Israeli reports claim two guardsmen were killed by Jordanian infiltrators and one missing. Burns condemned the raids as retaliation and urged restraint.
