Portugal civil leaders pressed to form cabinet with generals

Portugal's military president and premier designate urged top civilian parties to return to the cabinet after Gen Vasco Goncalves was ousted. Socialists and Popular Democrats feared joining with the Communists, risking a government without broad support. Militants warned they might go direct to the people if parties fail to agree.

Boston School Desegregation Day Marred by Protests

About 100 protesters were arrested near South Boston High as classes opened amid desegregation rulings. Police moved groups of demonstrators from K and 4th streets and elsewhere, mostly per Progressive Labor Party. Attendance at local schools was well below projections with 12 percent at South Boston High and no incidents in safety zones. Aerial guards and police prevented violence while federal officials observed.

Four Hurt in East Terre Haute Three-Vehicle Crash

A bloody weekend on local highways ends with four injured in a three vehicle crash on U.S. 40 three miles east of S.R. 46 Vigo County deputies report a truck pulling a boat crossed the centerline and hit a westbound car driven by Frederick Brattin 38 of Rockville before the boat separated from its trailer.

17 year old held in Wilkey case arrest fuels probe

Vigo County authorities detained a 17 year old youth in connection with the Aug 28 slaying of 17 year old gasoline station attendant Michael Dean Wilkey. The grand jury convened to review the murder and robbery charges as investigators from the sheriff department and Indiana State Police pursued leads. Wilkey was found shot five times in the head and once in the chest at the 500 Plateline Service Station near I 70 and SR 46. About $130 was taken.

Quake in Turkey Leaves Thousands Dead and Homeless

A powerful 6.8 magnitude quake struck eastern Turkey on Saturday, killing at least 1,500 people and threatening a higher toll. Rescue teams worked into remote villages as aftershocks and tremors kept survivors in panic. Premier Demirel promised aid and shelter for the displaced.

Seven year old Donnie Todd, battling asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy and kidney failure, has returned to first grade, grown two inches, gained 22 pounds, and outgrown his clothes. His war veteran father donated a kidney and calls the recovery a miracle, believing divine design guided his son's survival. Terre Hawe YMCA a United Way agency will begin a new schedule this month offering mother and daughter swims Saturdays and dad and son swims plus karate scuba rifle safety chess club and more for families girls and women. NRA rifle safety judo and junior leader programs target ages 10 to 19 with future plans for cheerleading tumbling dance baton and girls sports. A large game room will be open 3 30 p m to 6 p m weekdays and 8 a m to noon on weekends.

Pope Paul VI said he was amazed and grieved by the attempted assassination of President Ford. He lamented bloodshed in Angola and Ethiopia and the kidnapping and murder of an Italian girl, urging renewed attention to fear of God and love of neighbor to curb delinquency.
