Kennedy praised the House tax reform bill as a milestone while urging reductions in net individual tax relief from 2.4 billion to 1.3 billion and trimming corporate tax increases. He testified before the Senate Finance Committee and suggested changes in oil and gas taxation, banks and savings institutions, capital gains, foundations, and state and local bonds. The Treasury plan would cut individual relief further after 1971 and raise corporate taxes, aiming to net slightly more revenue overall.

Sullivan Indiana residents were evacuated as state fire marshal investigators probed a gasoline leak near a filling station on South Court Street. Fire Chief Joe Sluder said workers may have discovered the leak after new storage tanks were installed. natural gas was ruled out. A resident first reported the odor in a basement, then sewer tests were conducted to gauge the leak’s extent.
