An editor notes highway deaths occur daily with Aug 9 used to illustrate. Walter Busch and his laboring wife died after a head on crash near Hudson, South Carolina, as their newborn also perished. Across cities, 56 adults 25 teenagers 10 children and two babies died that day 93 fatalities.
The White House said negotiators may have adjusted positions toward a settlement. Press secretary Moyers noted both sides are working hard to reconcile differences as a possible steel strike looms. The union reportedly reduced wage demands to about 48 cents an hour, while industry offers neared 43 cents. About 450,000 workers earn roughly $4.40 per hour with benefits. Johnson awaited a 2 p.m. progress report from Wirtz and Connor, with a Labor Day settlement hoped for before the deadline.
Stran Steel Plant of National Steel Corp in Terre Haute will receive a large Navy order totaling 2.5 million dollars for 455 pre engineered buildings to be shipped to South Viet Nam. The 2.8 million square feet of roof area will support warehousing and storage for the war effort, built by a joint venture including Raymond International Morrison Knudsen J A Jones and Brown Root. Completion is required in 90 days, with 275 buildings specified in the order.
India reported two American-made jet fighters shot down as Pakistani pilots clashed over the Aknoor Chhamb sector in southeast Kashmir at dawn. A Pakistani F86 Sabre was destroyed in air combat and another was hit by ground fire and crashed in Indian territory.

About 1,400 U S Marines join the Viet Nam buildup as U S forces expand in the region. Washington AP reports voluntary enlistments in the armed services rose in August after President Johnson ordered a doubling of Selective Service goals. Marines up about 20 percent, Army around 19 percent, Navy and Air Force anticipate surpassing monthly targets as recruitment accelerates amid the Vietnam buildup.
Police searched for two robbers who entered the Household Finance office at 20 N. 6th St. shortly after 12:20 PM bound two employees and a customer and fled with an undetermined amount of cash. The manager, Hubert Scheidler, freed himself and notified police. Scheidler said both men appeared about 30, only one carried a gun.
About 1,400 additional U S Marines began landing in South Viet Nam on Thursday night at Chu Lai 50 miles south of Da Nang. The new arrivals bring total Marines in Viet Nam to 31,200 as part of the Da Nang buildup. President Johnson had set a manpower goal of 125,000 with 90,500 counted as of Aug 26 across services.
