25 Die in Accidents Over Long Holiday

Old Irishman's Bridge Dedicated at Fowler Park

The 1845 Vigo County Irishman s Bridge, moved to Fowler Park after 126 years on Foree Road, was formally dedicated. Fundraising began in 1967 to relocate the oldest covered bridge in Indiana with major donations from Columbian Enameling and Stamping Co and local firms. The bridge spans a finger lake in the county s park, with ties to local historians the Girl Scout Council and county officials.

Remember Karyn Returns to School in Idaho After Injury

Seven year old Karyn Prestwich returns to class in North Fork near Salmon Idaho more than a year after being shot by a hunter who mistook her for a deer. She wears a leg cast to the waist and uses crutches during a cautious home spin on a snowmobile. Funds totaling about 17000 pour in for medical bills including a 2000 anonymous gift and a 350 coin collection from a Washington state donor. Roy Wells the shooter from Torrance California previously charged with assault pleaded guilty to negligent use of a firearm and sent a 500 donation plus a birthday doll. Bowen declares bid for Indiana governor in Bremen

House Speaker Otis Bowen announced his candidacy for governor at a Bremen snow ceremony, naming property tax relief as a campaign goal. Bowen, a Marshall County physician for 26 years, spoke outside his Victorian home as townspeople watched in a snowstorm. He dismissed tying aides to a slate and hinted at possible delegate strategy for the May primary. He paid a 3600 dollar filing fee to the GOP state chairman.
