Frankfurt hijack ends as gunman killed by police
A gunman on an Air Canada DC8 at Frankfurt Airport was shot by police sharpshooters through a partly opened jetliner door, freeing a hostage, Margit Sommer. Viktor Widera, 58, was mortally wounded. Sommer, a Montreal resident, was unharmed after the 24 hour standoff.

Riding horses killed on highway near Los Altos
Four high value riding horses panicked by barking dogs fled a pasture and were killed on Interstate 280 south of San Francisco.
