U S Command reports two jet planes attacked by MiG fighters and surface to air missiles were shot down over North Vietnam. Reconnaissance planes were involved, and rescue efforts were underway. Ensuing fighting left dozens of casualties among both sides and civilians. Continued on Page 8.
Sen. Birch Bayh urges President Nixon to support a constitutional amendment to abolish the Electoral College and install a popular vote for president. A Gallup poll shows 81 percent favoring the plan, which would trigger a runoff if no candidate surpasses 40 percent. Bayh says a majority in Congress may back abolition, though two thirds is still needed.
President elect Richard Nixon will discuss federal appointments and programs with Republican governors and senators this week. Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes leads the group, meeting Nixon at the Pierre Hotel. Names are not yet announced.
Terre Haute native Louis B. Russell Jr., 43, the first Hoosier heart transplant recipient, arrived at Weir Cook Airport Indianapolis after surgery in Virginia. He was greeted by about 75 relatives and planned to visit his school, Public School No. 69, Indianapolis, soon after.

An Air America C46 charter for U S Aid crashed shortly after takeoff from Savannakhet Laos killing 32 of 34 aboard. The passengers were mainly U S Aid officers and local employees. Air America operates contract flights for the U S government in Asia and the Philippines.

In Brazil Indiana, Ralph E Bedwell, 33, died in a two story home fire on U S Highway 40. His mother Angela Bedwell 34 and son Robert Munion 15 survived with minor burns. Firefighter Roy Long sustained injuries while entering the burning house to rescue others. The blaze alarmed at around 2 45 a m and led to the deaths of Ralph in an upstairs room. ruby
