Sunday Driving Might Be Slowed

A rapid sequence of developments led Mayor William J. Brighton to learn Hulman Field will not halt operations in December. Shell Oil Co. will guarantee fuel until year end as fuel becomes emergency at the airport. Brighton urged fuel-saving city measures and bus use as a plan to cope with limited allocations from Gulf Oil and national shortages.

Senate Rules Committee Approves Ford Nomination

The Senate Rules committee voted unanimously to approve Gerald R. Ford as vice president. The nomination moves to the Senate floor for a vote next week with a final Senate decision planned the following week. National Weather Service reports showers and thunderstorms tonight and Wednesday with 40 percent chances. Lows tonight 44 to 48, highs Wednesday mid 60s to low 70s, then mostly sunny and cooler Friday and a chance of rain Saturday with highs in the 60s. Portions of Indiana remain cloudy and cool through Saturday with variable temperatures. Dirt-dust count shows 108 micrograms per cubic meter, higher than 1972 average. Sun times listed and thermometer readings provided.

Short Session Opens as Indiana Legislature Begins

The 98th Indiana General Assembly convened for a one day organizational session in Indianapolis. The House started actions while the Senate adjourned after a brief opening ceremony. Gov Bowen sent two veto messages but no action followed. Representatives filed 44 bills and one resolution focusing on lotteries and pari mutuel betting. Reps Stoughton and Mahoney were sworn in to fill vacancies amid legal challenges. The House sustained Bowen veto on a wiretap bill but failed to override 12-84. Leaders target Valentine’s Day adjournment with 30 session days allowed.
