Skylab 3 lifts off for 84 day space mission
Three rookie American astronauts Gerald Carr William Pogue and Edward Gibson begin Skylab 3 the longest planned space journey a marathon 84 day mission to study sun earth and man while observing comet Kohoutek. The Saturn 1B rocket launched at 9 01 a m EST and the crew will conduct five rocket firings and docking before a 17 400 mph orbit.
