World War I ends as nation recalls armistice fifty years on

World War I ended in 1918 an armistice that left more than 8.5 million soldiers dead, including 125,000 Americans. Estimates place civilian and military losses up to 13 million as empires dissolved and Russia faced upheaval. France Germany Britain suffered staggering losses. America entered the major powers.

Veterans Day Observed With Downtown Parade

Vigo County veterans from World War I to Vietnam paraded along Wabash Avenue in Terre Haute marking the 50th Veterans Day observance. A memorial service led by Capt. Wayne W. Hoffman followed the parade near 7th Street as the Rose Poly ROTC band played taps and Mayor Leland Larrison spoke. Ft Harrison American Legion Post 40 honored its 50 year members with a reviewing-stand display before an open house at post headquarters.

New Counsel Plans To Ask Continuance

James Earl Ray switches lawyers two days before his murder trial for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ray dismisses Arthur Hanes and hires Percy Foreman. Foreman plans to seek a trial postponement, possibly delaying start until next year. Sheriff Morris confirms the move and that Foreman may request time to review the case.

Angles In Nixon Plot Casts Shadow Over Brooklyn

A 43 year old Arab immigrant Ahmed Namer and his two sons Hussein and Abdo Namer are held on bail in a conspiracy to murder Nixon case. They were arraigned on charges of conspiracy to commit murder possession of deadly weapons and criminal solicitation. Investigators are checking possible links to Sirhan Sirhan and motives remain unclear. Nixon was in Florida and aides say concerns over a major plot are over exaggerated.

Enemy Attacks DMZ Border Outposts. Marines Hit Back

North Vietnamese gunners fired from inside the DMZ at U S Marines south of the border killing four and wounding 41 in five attacks on three positions. Marine planes and artillery hit back destroying bunkers and firing positions near Con Thien and the Thiên outpost as observers tracked emplacements inside the DMZ.
