The 1968 presidential race closes with Nixon preferred to win but Humphrey making significant inroads. Voters face a weather-quiet election day and a record turnout challenge, while Wallace attracts disillusioned voters in a tight three-way contest.
New York AP report shows Harris and Gallup diverging with Humphrey leading Nixon 43 to 40 in Harris poll and Nixon ahead 42 to 40 in Gallup. Margin of error 3 to 4 percent keeps race very close with potential dead heat. Vietnam war remains central issue as Nixon questions bombing halt and Johnson era policies.
Tribune reports strong early turnout in Vigo County with heavy morning voting at Otter Creek and Fourth Ward precincts. Voters largely focus on state and local races as 73 candidates appear on the 1968 ballot. Some Democrats seek to “scratch” for Wallace while others back party candidates.

A cooler change arrives Wednesday with highs around 57 to 62 and overnight lows 40 to 46. Precipitation probability about 60 percent. Illinois sees rain and thundershowers continuing into Wednesday.

Earl S. Cummings former pastor of Brazil First Christian Church is charged by a Clay County grand jury with 51 counts of forgery. He is free on bond on four theft charges and a violation of the Indiana Securities Act and awaits arraignment after a Monday court appearance.
