President Johnson faces throat surgery to remove a polyp and repair a hernia, with doctors reporting excellent health and no serious problems. He will rest for two weeks at his Texas ranch, delaying campaign travel before Tuesday's elections.
In Panmunjom the United Nations Command protested six American and one South Korean killed south of the armistice line. Maj. Gen. Richard Ciccolella warned North Korea of a collision course after detailing the ambush and presenting a bloody glove as evidence. Gen. Charles Bonesteel Jr. transmitted a stern note demanding an end to violent attacks and kidnappings. The North Korean envoy refused to deliver the communique to Pyongyang, delaying the message as the session adjourned.
The 500 Cherry Street Corporation plans a phased downtown development starting with demolition at Fifth and Ohio to create 27 000 square feet of public parking for about 50 cars intended for the Christmas season. The project will expand to cover ten properties between Fourth and Fifth Streets, north of Ohio to the alley toward Wabash, making it the largest downtown real estate move in years and a key part of the Park and Shop program. The corporation, a 33 member downtown business group, aims to ensure ample parking as part of a broader effort to sustain downtown values.
South Vietnamese militiamen outnumbered nearly nine to one repelled 700 Viet Cong with armed helicopter and fighter bomber support in nearly five hours of hard fighting near the Cambodian border. U S units of the 25th Division battled bunkers in the same area, with air war accelerating and four MIG jets sighted northwest of Hanoi.

The child died Oct 21 after she returned to Terre Haute from Logansport. A prior hospitalization followed injuries the mother said occurred when the baby toppled from a couch. The grand jury will also consider a separate probe into a violent incident.
Three Indiana State University students from Richmond Larry Williams Phillip Williams and David Weston appeared before Vigo Circuit Court Judge H Ralph Johnston on 7500 bond each. Their cases were continued to November 9 to arrange counsel. Creighton Dickerson of Kalamazoo Michigan remained hospitalized at St Anthony Hospital after police shot him during a police stop following an alleged northside tavern hold up. Witnesses saw the four flee the holdup scene in a car matching the description and were later found by police. Local authorities say Larry Williams was a standout football star and top student at Richmond High School last year.

A New York Supreme Court justice found Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. guilty of two counts of criminal contempt and ordered 30 days in jail on each count with a $250 fine. The sentences run concurrently and can be served outside New York State after the upcoming election. The order relates to a $162,000 libel judgment against Powell.
