Vigo County 1972 tax rate cuts eyed by state board

Four Indiana State Board of Tax Commissioners field representatives completed a two day review of Vigo County budgets. Rates range from 15.20 in West Terre Haute to 9.34 in Otter Creek Township with final board approval required by Jan 15. Hoffman Lands Merit System For Terre Haute Police

Terre Haute Chief of Detectives Frank Hoffman tells the Break fast Optimist Club that a merit system will govern promotions in the Terre Haute Police Department. Testing to begin later this month will be conducted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police with additional funding sought from the Criminal Justice Planning Agency. The department, now at 109 officers, will base advancement on a 50 point written exam 40 point oral interview and 10 point seniority. The mayor will appoint the chief and assistant chief.
