Downtown Wabash Avenue hosts the citys first 500 Festival a two day jamboree promoting the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. Terre Haute showcases a decorated main street with banners pennants and patriotic decor as merchants display 1958 race photos and drivers action memories.
Council action on a Southeast Terre Haute fire station stalled after an unfavorable committee report. Councilman John S. Lamb introduced the measure but was not present. A fluoridation proposal for the city water also appeared, urged by Dr. Byron Rutledge with strong health authority backing.
Rome dispatch reports Samuel bishop of Chicago with high fever possibly pneumonia. Dr. Ralph Bergen stated at 10:45 a m there was no lung congestion.

Paris May 21 The Council of the Republic voted Premier Pflimlin emergency powers for Algeria 233 to 62 in a second confidence vote while the lower chamber passed it 473 to 93. The outcome strengthens Pflimlin for now though De Gaulle remains a political rival amid ongoing fighting in Algeria.
President Eisenhower faces pressure from Congress for excise tax cuts while ruling out rapid broad tax slashes. Experts expect no immediate cuts but endorse possible targeted reductions to ease living costs. He warned business and labor to restrain prices and wages as the economy slows and progress toward vitality remains the aim.
The Senate readied a compromise postal rate bill aiming to raise first class letters to four cents with July 1 implementation and broader increases. The measure would also raise pay for about 500,000 postal workers by 7 to 10 percent, boosting annual revenue to roughly 575 million dollars.
Lebanon formally protested the United Arab Republics perceived interference in internal affairs to the Arab League in Cairo. A U.N. Security Council option was kept alive, with Beirut demanding an immediate Arab League session to address charges that Syrians and Egyptians aid Lebanese opposition, amid Beirut violence including three bombings.

Harold E. Stassen, 51, lost the Pennsylvania GOP primary for governor to Arthur T. McGonigle by about two to one. The Minnesota native sought to become the second person to govern two states. Other statewide results included David L. Lawrence winning the Pennsylvania Democratic governor nomination and Roy E. Furman losing to Lawrence. McGonigle’s victory was his first election bid.
Defense Secretary McElroy hinted that U S scientists are pursuing a secret new weapon to defeat enemy missiles. He described classified efforts and noted possible concepts such as a heat barrier or atmospheric cloud. He cited a $601.98 million space program with satellites and a chimpanzee project, predicting higher defense spending ahead.
In Tokyo on May 21 American businessman Joseph Crowley a former Yale football star was arrested on suspicion of fatally injuring his brother in law T A D Jones 45 son of Yale coach Tad Jones. Jones was found dead May 8 in an Imperial Hotel room with injuries and a cerebral hemorrhage attributed to an outside force. Authorities call the case circustantial with limited grounds for indictment and Crowley was arrested at the hotel.
Three senators say anti American demonstrations against Vice President Nixon in South America may strengthen Eisenhower foreign aid requests. They cite Caracas violence and broader anti American sentiment as boosting the case for full authorizations despite House cuts. The lawmakers also flag Communist influence in the regions and call for a full inquiry into Latin American incidents.
