Auto Dispute Not Settled Yet in Chrysler Strike

Detroit May 1 The Chrysler strike shows progress with a verbal agreement on most points but the UAW says issues remain. Weckler cites language as the delay while union leader Reuther insists unresolved terms persist. The 97 day strike idled 144000 workers and halted over 450000 cars and trucks. ratification by workers is needed before production resumes.

New York Elevator Workers Return to Work After Big Climb

In New York City on May 1, 12000 Local 32-B elevator workers ended a four day strike after a three man fact finding board takes the dispute. Arthur S. Meyer will lead hearings in about two weeks with non binding recommendations. Union seeks higher pay shorter hours and pensions while landlords warn raises require rent increases under rent controls.

Telephone crews back on jobs ending nationwide tie-up

About 11 000 installation workers of Western Electric returned to work after a week-long strike. Division 6 of the Communication Workers of America said the walkout was called off four hours before scheduled picket lines. An agreement reached on the South Bend incident ended contract delays and a separate money settlement for the 104 sympathy strikers was denied. Negotiations to resume later today.

Young killer breaks down in Knoxville murder casing

George King a 16 year old suspect in the slaying of Carl Woodward on a Knoxville street admitted the shooting as an accident during questioning at a detention home. He said he fired a .22 pistol into the air from a car with six other teens to "see what Woodward had to say" and claimed the weapon went off unintentionally.

Anti-Gambling Bill Fought by Telephone Firms

Washington May 1. Telephone companies object to a proposed anti gambling bill arguing it would force them to police gambling activity. Clyde S Bailey of the United States Independent Telephone Association says a “whole army” would be needed to monitor calls and that it would convert telcos into police agencies. He notes daily toll and local call volumes and insists crime detection is not their business.

Census by mail tested in Michigan Ohio may shape 1960 count

A census supervisor said the mail in self enumeration test in Ingham and Livingston counties Michigan and Franklin County Ohio produced strong results. More than 100000 forms were returned in Columbus in three days. The plan could influence the 1960 census but a final decision would come five or six years hence.

Tax Writers Face Billion-Dollar Revenue Dilemma

Washington May 1 U P congressional tax writers confront a billion dollar problem from recent excise tax cuts totaling 976 million dollars. The House Ways and Means Committee trimmed levies on theater tickets telephone bills movies sports events furs jewelry and luggage. The dilemma is where to raise funds to offset the loss with options including higher deficits or closing tax loopholes as President Truman threatens a veto unless revenue is found. Plane crash in Lebanon claims six lives

A B 25 bomber from Perrin Air Base crashed in a residential area of Lebanon Illinois during a training flight yesterday. Woman fights fire overcome by smoke at Fairbanks Park residence

The wife of Frank Buddy Beck, orchestra leader, battled a house fire at 14 B Fairbanks Park Friday morning. She was overcome by smoke and treated with oxygen by a resuscitation squad before being placed in a physician's care. About $100 damage resulted, with a believed cause of a child playing with matches. She, 24, tried to extinguish flames with a garden hose and was unconscious when fire crews arrived. The blaze centered on a bed and also burned window curtains.
