Mobilization Director Charles E. Wilson said the United States has the military power to deter any aggressor and that the inflationary spiral has been moderated. He warned the government must tighten brakes, seeking stronger price curbs and anti racketeering measures.
An explosion at Western Tar Products on Prairieton road and Preston street damaged property estimated at five to ten thousand dollars and injured three workers. Bennie Goodman 33 Edward Matherly 63 and Elmer Dorsett 34 were hurt. two were hospitalized and the third treated for side pain. The blast sent flames and thick smoke across the area as workers atop a 5000 gallon pitch mixing tank attempted to heat a line. Firemen quickly extinguished the blaze and investigators said fumes may have triggered the explosion.
Selective Service headquarters in Terre Haute reported an order for 90 Vigo county youths to undergo pre induction physical and mental examinations on April 17. The potential draftees will receive mailed notices to report at the Federal Building for bus transport to Indianapolis for the exams.
Joseph E. Kish, assistant director of public relations, named acting director replacing Betty A. Mann who takes a leave of absence. Kish began today and has long served on the college publicity staff since February 1949, with ties to athletic publicity and local sports writing. Marcus H. Williams named advisor for student publications.
A three-vehicle crash on U S 36 five miles west of Rockville Indiana injured two men initially and a third hours later while they cleared wreckage. William Newlin 36 of Rockville suffered critical injuries and Darwin Redman 46 of Dana was later treated for chest injuries. Newlin was moved to Vermillion County Hospital in Clinton in fair condition after hospital evaluation.
Riverside March 27 Police intensified search for Doris Trask Cook 18 after the body of her husband Richard Cook 18 was found on a rural road. Their eight month old baby played near the father’s body as Sgt Lawrence J Walker 20 an Air Force Base serviceman was held on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon in connection with the case.
Civil War veteran Alexander Sanders aged 108 died in Charleston, Illinois. Born August 6, 1842 in Owen County Indiana, he served as a scout in the Union army. He moved to Coles County in 1855, farmed near Humboldt from 1876 onward, remained active in his garden, was a grand nephew of General Stonewall Jackson, and is survived by five children.
Chicago reports a new serum drug named Krebiozen produced by Dr. Stevan Durovic. In 29 patients treated, two in Chicago hospitals and seven in New York showed partial to full recovery, while nine Chicago and two New York patients died, all cases displaying marked anatomical and clinical improvement. The drug, derived from horses, was described by Dr. Andrew C. Ivy at a scientific meeting and the report notes ongoing experimentation with hopeful signs.
The twenty seventh annual charity ball for St. Anthony's Hospital at Hotel Deming showcased a parade of gowns in pastel satins crepes and taffetas. Notable attendees included Mrs. Frank Crawford ball chair man Miss Blanche Kintz Miss Adelaide Prox Mrs. Paul Humphrey and Mrs. Joseph Weber among others.
Windy and mild conditions reported by the Weather Bureau. Morning readings at 6 am show 39 degrees, noon 57, 52 at 9 am, 58 at 2 pm. Sunrise at 5:43, sunset at 6:09. River stage remains at 8.3 feet and stationary.
The high yesterday reached 49 degrees with a low of 37 and no precipitation recorded. The weather steady, with no notable events or warnings issued by authorities.
Cloudy and mild with windy spells and occasional rain through tonight and Wednesday. Night lows range from 45 to 50 in Indiana and 50 in Illinois with highs around 60. North areas expect 55 to 60 by Wednesday, with southern localities near 60 to 70. A stray temperature reading shows 40 at 6 a.m. and 59 at 2 p.m.
Otho Steele a 37 year old inmate who fled U S penitentiary south of the city near West Terre Haute was pursued by a joint force of federal state and local officers. Described as harmless he is tall about five feet ten inches and 259 pounds with hazel eyes and was last seen after climbing wall and disappearing in brush.
Zagreb March 27 Yugoslavia charged that at least six Soviet directed spy schools were operating in neighboring Russian satellite countries to train agents for espionage against Marshal Tito's regime.
Terre Haute airport manager John Marcotte and pilot Fred Miller reported sighting a round flat object at 4 45 pm Monday. They described the craft as not a balloon or ordinary jet and said it moved rapidly at a near 45 degree angle over the city, appearing at about 100 feet altitude as it disappeared.
Buenos Aires March 27 The Argentine transportation ministry reports 11 dead and eight injured from yesterday's government plane crash near Rio Grande Tierra del Fuego. The DC-4 of Argentine Airlines was on a scheduled flight to Buenos Aires. among the dead are three of four crew and eight of 15 passengers.
American troops fought through a Chinese regiment on the western front north of Parallel 38 in a slow advance toward the Red Korean border. They reported 350 communists killed as U.N. planes dropped surrender leaflets and forces prepared for a possible major stand above the parallel. Allied air and ground actions continued with heavy vehicle and rail center attacks and tactical reassurances from U.S. and ROK units near Imjin River.
A navy torpedo bomber with four crew crashed in the Atlantic about 100 miles east of Cape Henry. The Atlantic fleet reports all four men are missing after a night search. A submarine spotted one man in the ocean who sank before rescue attempts could reach him. Four submarines joined the Razorback in the search.
Mrs Ellen Knauff, 36, German born war bride barred from citizenship by a Washington immigration board, surrendered to officials in New York. Edward J. Shaughnessy said she would be held at Ellis Island after parole was revoked, pending final disposition of her case. The government alleged she aided Czechoslovak spies through periodic visits to a mission in Frankfurt while employed in the civil censorship office of the U S Military government. Knauff plans an appeal claiming no spying.
Washington witnesses report the treasury has set up a special fraud section to check income tax returns of gamblers and racketeers. Secretary Snyder pledged a continued drive to bring chiselers to justice with Edward Foley presenting the statement. Internal Revenue agents are probing nearly 2500 cases in the criminal area as Kefauver previews a Friday windup of the televised hearing.
Three members of the Senate crime investigating committee disclosed they have received threats to their lives. Senator Tobey reported three threats two by letter and one by telephone. Chairman Kefauver said he had received several threats in crackpot letters. Senator Hunt said a letter warned him against meddling during Miami hearings.
Kefauver said Morris Kleinman and Louis Rothkopf of Cleveland labeled top rank gamblers and Jacob Guzik of Chicago known as a Ca pone gangster may face automatic contempt charges after refusing to answer the committee. The Senate may be asked to order their immediate jailing. Volatile Senator Tobey notes possible steps.
In Paris on March 27 western deputy foreign ministers returned to their conference with Russians, aiming to arrange a top level meeting to ease world tensions. British Deputy Ernest Davies carried instructions from Foreign Secretary Morrison, while U S Delegate Philip Jessup pursued a list of subjects for a possible foreign ministers conference. The three western delegates met at the French foreign ministry before the four power session, with sources saying talks may extend into a fifth or sixth week.
Jesse James Jr., 75, a retired Kansas City attorney and son of the famed Missouri bandit, died of a heart ailment. Born in Nashville, he practiced law in Kansas City for 25 years, retired, and moved to California 24 years ago. His daughter Jo Frances Ross recalls his father was killed in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1882.
