About 60 commissioners from 14 Indiana counties met in Terre Haute to discuss making the county commissioners’ office a full time job. They noted duties now handled by various boards could be consolidated, and higher pay might attract qualified personnel. They also considered future legislation affecting duties.
A southside woman Jo Ann Letty aged 30 of 1125 Poplar St. pleaded guilty in City Court to child neglect and was sentenced to ten days in Vigo County Jail.
Indiana forecasts show highs in mid 80s and lows in 60s with two thirds of an inch of rain mainly Sunday and Monday. Illinois expects cooler temps with near 90 highs and 60s lows, about a half inch rainfall, showers early next week. Mrs Letty was arrested March 19 after neighbors reported mistreatment of five children. they were taken to Vigo County Juvenile Center and returned to Mrs Setty Friday.
Sen Tydings proposed adding registration and licensing to the mail order bill after a closed door debate. The Judiciary Committee approved the amendment, and a motion to postpone until July 9 passed 7 to 5 with Burdick Thurmond Fong Hruska Ervin Long Eastland voting for and Tydings and Dodd Dirksen Bayh Hart voting against. Three absentees Kennedy Smathers Scott could have influenced the outcome.
A GOP candidate for joint state representative from Vigo and Sullivan Counties, then serving in the U.S. Navy, will be honored at a "Welcome Home Chuck" party. Chuck Walker received his discharge Wednesday. event runs 2 to 7 p.m. at 934 S 6th St with Congressman John T. Myers, Mayor Leland Larrison, city officials, and fellow Republicans Boyd Schepper and James Cahill among guests.
Wayne Schriver, 3222 S. 6th St, found guilty of malicious destruction of property and sentenced to five days in Vigo County Jail plus a $45 fine. Ex-wife June testified he damaged rooms at her home. during the session Schriver’s sister and ex-wife fought and were escorted out.
