Senate Nears Vote On Four Point Five Billion Foreign Aid Plan
Administration aides say the Senate will likely approve a 4.5 billion foreign aid bill with limited cuts as tonight or Friday’s vote nears. An amendment seeks to halve the total and other moves aim to trim the program. Support exists to curb aid to Yugoslavia and India. Senate tacticians estimate about 30 GOP votes are needed to fend off reductions, Democrats could provide 15 to 20 votes. The White House prefers 4.5 billion though Eisenhower asked for 4.9 billion. the House cut was 3.8 billion. An amendment by Senator O Mahoney would tie extra Air Force funds to the aid program. Other items include a 1.6 billion school construction bill facing debate and a civil rights bill advancing from the House Rules Committee, though Senate prospects remain uncertain.
