Illinois Senate Hurries To Pass Laborious Truck Bills

The Illinois Senate fast tracked measures to boost the state police by 100 officers and increase truck weight and length limits. A companion bill would let overweight trucks exceed limits by five percent or up to 1000 pounds if cargo shifts are unavoidable, and raise maximum trailer length from 45 to 50 feet. The House already endorsed these bills. The Senate killed a township road maintenance funding bill, and the House defeated a license fee cut for autos while preserving heavy truck rate hikes. The House sent to the governor a bill on absentee voting and advanced a car safety belt design requirement.
