Prospective Olympian Must Make Big Choice
Tracy Smith weighs his options between the 5,000 and 10,000 meters as he enters the US Olympic trials at the Los Angeles Coliseum. He and rival Gerry Lindgren lead the field, with Bob Day challenging in the 5,000. Smith trains 80 to 120 miles weekly and believes altitude may favor Keino and other highland runners. Trials schedule places the 5,000 on Saturday and the 10,000 on Sunday with strong American hopes for medals.

Turbine’s Future Being Decided Today
USAC directors met in closed session in Indianapolis to decide the fate of turbine engines in USAC racing. The rules panel recommended piston engines only for all events starting Jan 1, 1969, a move aimed at turbine cars such as STP Turbocar driven by Andy Granatelli. Turbines had not won a USAC race, though a turbine nearly won the 1967 Indianapolis 500 and led the 1968 race before a mechanical failure.
