Lutheran Merger Plans Face Doctrinal Divide and Progress
Doctrinal differences blocked a proposed union among three Lutheran denominations at St Paul. Meanwhile progress emerged in Minneapolis Cedar Falls where the Evangelical Lutheran Church urged lawmakers to pursue union with three other Lutheran groups. At Cedar Falls the United Evangelical Lutheran Church voted 373 to 19 in favor of merging toward a new American Lutheran Church. Dr John W Behnken was elected to an eighth term as Missouri Synod president, 72, with this to be his last term.
