Steel Bargaining Returns to Individual Talks With Big Three
The union rejected a five year package offer from the Big Three corporations. Companies claimed about 65 cents per hour added costs, about 17 cents in year one, while the union projects a take home raise of about a nickel. With 650000 steelworkers earning $2.48 hourly, McDonald moves to direct negotiations with the Big Three and other firms. A strike risk looms if no agreement by June 30 when current contracts expire. Previously the union bargained separately though U S Steel often set the industry pattern.
