Swissair to suspend flights amid pilot protest across 79 cities

Pilots strike and a directive request for a shutdown were cancelled as decisions were left to individual pilots. Swissair announced flight suspensions Monday due to the protest, prompted by the UN response to calls for tougher action on air piracy. Forsberg from Finland urged a Security Council directive to resume work on an aviation crime convention. The Hague Convention of 1970 requires extradition or punishment for pirates, but lacks measures against noncompliant states. UN Secretary General Waldheim expressed disappointment over the stoppage as June’s Security Council president Lazar Mojsov called for council members to convene.
