Lilly coins move to Smithsonian vault in Washington
The $5.5 million Josiah K. Lilly coin collection, totaling 6,125 pieces from the United States, South America and ancient Europe, was secretly flown from Indianapolis to Washington. A Brinks armored truck delivered the 600 pound hoard to the Museum of History and Technology, where Smithsonian experts inventory the black Moroc coin cases and velvet trays. Congress granted tax credits to Lilly's estate for acquiring the collection rather than auctioning it.
