Rites set for E K Strachan at Callahan Funeral Home

Funeral services for Edward K. Strachan 63 of RR 3 will be held at 3 p m Tuesday at Callahan Funeral Home with Rev Allan Harlan officiating. Burial follows at Calvary Cemetery. Strachan died Sunday at St Anthony Hospital. He leaves wife Margaret a daughter Mrs Robert R Bennett and three grandchildren He served as a WWII lieutenant commander and held various civic and professional memberships.

Plan Rites for Samuel Johnson

A coroner in Vigo plans to report on the death Sunday of 54 year old Samuel S. Johnson of RR 3 West Terre Haute whose body was found at his daughter’s home near Prairie Creek. He apparently died from a self inflicting rifle shot. Survivors include his widow Elizabeth two daughters Doris Burroughs and Viretta Lockard his mother Mrs Edna Johnson a sister and four brothers. Services are set for 1 p.m. Thursday at DeBaun Funeral Home with Bethesda Cemetery burial and viewing after 6 p.m. Tuesday.

John Andrighetti of 659 Walnut Street is highlighted among 89 June graduates from Purdue University ROTC who received commissions Saturday. He is noted as a distinguished military graduate during the ceremony.

Ex Malleable Leader Drowns While Fishing

Former Terre Haute Malleable and Manufacturing Corp. chairman and president Phor Yatsko drowned while fishing on a lake near Terre Haute. The body was recovered from 12 feet deep water about 15 feet from the north shore with Sgt. Robert Wiot and state police assisting. Sheriff’s deputies and Vigo County authorities awaited autopsy results. Yatsko, a Sullivan County native, led the firm from 1948 and served in civic roles. He left behind widow Lucille, a daughter in Akron, two brothers, and four grandchildren.

Hoosier students earn Yale degrees at 266th commencement

Twenty six Indiana residents among 2375 candidates receive degrees from Yale University at New Haven. Terre Haute residents Glen Homan and Edward Weisberger, both B A degrees, and Dennis Magid of Linton receive advanced degrees. Baccalaureate is June 11 and Senior Class Day follows on Old Campus.

Residence Burglary Reported. Small Theft Netted

Police investigated a home burglary at 1420 North 10th Street in which entry was gained through an unlocked window. Thieves took a portable radio and an electric clock totaling about 70 dollars in merchandise. The note mentions a large tea kettle owned by the Oriental Tea Cup in Boston.

Looter Takes Watch Dog and Five Pups in Golden Burglary

A Jefferson County woman reported a burglary at her Golden home where a thief took every item, including her watch dog and the animal's five new pups. Local police investigated the unusual theft and recovered no leads.

Five Escapees Sought From Indiana Work Camps

Police hunt five inmates who escaped from state facilities early Sunday. Two men fled Henryville Work Camp after tying up a night watchman and stealing his car with a pistol. Howard Begley, 45, and William Sutton, 50, are the primary targets. Begley has a 214 year forgery sentence from Johnson County and Sutton a 180 day public intoxication sentence. Three teens from Indiana Reformatory fled Chain O Lakes Youth Camp near Fort Wayne, Eugene Duncan 18 Lawrence County, Vernon Todd 18 Delaware County, Ronald Pier 19 Howard County, all burglary terms.

Weekend Toll Rising in Indiana Crash Deaths

Indiana Traffic Deaths Rise in Weekend Toll

The Associated Press reports multiple weekend fatalities across Illinois and Indiana. Victims include Norma J. Hopper 25 of Mount Carmel killed after a crash with a pole in Princeton and 18 year old Brendan Smith of Lapel killed after his car left a road near Anderson. An Indianapolis 6 year old James Mills Jr died from injuries after a street incident. Five others were seriously hurt in a two car crash near Bloomfield and several more injured in separate crashes.

Two Men Sentenced in Vigo Circuit Court

Judge H Ralph Johnston sentenced two local men in separate charges of assault and battery on a child and second degree burglary. William J LaFleur 35 of 237 N 14 St was found guilty of assault on a 12 year old girl and given one to five years in Indiana State Prison. Louis Edward Riley 27 of 1802 N 7th St pleaded guilty to the burglary at Peke Inn and received two to five years starting at Indiana Reformatory.

Clay Graduates Honored by Elks State Convention

Indiana Elks honored three 1967 Clay County graduates at the state convention in French Lick. Myra Gibson of Staunton High won second in the youth leadership contest and received a $75 savings bond and a trophy. Anita Eldridge of Van Buren and Tom Butwin of Brazil were awarded Elks National Foundation scholarships. A 15-person Brazil Elks delegation attended, with local guests at the event.

A 17 year old youth Fred Mc Neely of 617 N 15th St was treated and released from Union Hospital after a man struck him in the face near the Four Square Church at 13th and Elm. He suffered a severe cut to the left eye and a broken nose.
