Congress Trias Request For Road Aid Abroad In Federal Highway Bill

The Senate sent a long-range federal highway bill to the House after trimming the measure to 1.381 billion dollars. It trims 208 million from the Public Works Committee plan, while House approval stood at 1.276 billion. Conference talks will settle differences. Both chambers favor more domestic road aid than Truman asked, but abroad funding is reduced. Rama Road in Nicaragua loses 8 million proposed by the Senate. the House allowed 4 million. Annual highway funding would be 500 million in each of 1953-54 and 1954-55, above Truman’s request but below committee levels. Senate approval followed voice vote after rejecting larger cuts from Douglas and Bridges.
