Train derailment rips through Vandalia Illinois injures five

A Pennsylvania Railroad express train derailed near Vandalia injuring one woman and five others. Ten mail clerks aboard the St. Louis to New York train were wounded. 11 cars tumbled 15 feet into the embankment and slid five blocks. One freight car fell into the Kaskaskia River while houses including the Bowles home were damaged. cause undetermined.

Morse Questions Veracity of Senate Leader in Satellite Bill Debate

Bomb damages UPI office in Lima

A small homemade bomb exploded at the United Press International office on the sixth floor of a local building in Lima Peru. The blast caused minor glass damage and minor cuts to a messenger with no immediate clue to the perpetrator or motive.

Mrs. Finkbine and her husband plan to leave Arizona to obtain an abortion after a court rejected legal sanction. The 30 year old mother of four says she took thalidimide tranquilizers early in pregnancy, linked to malformed births. Montrose Crippled In Detroit River Collision

A British freighter Montrose lay a crippled hull in the Detroit River after colliding with a barge Monday night. Forty one crew members were rescued without injury as the ship listed with a large hole in the port side. The Montrose, 442 feet, remained anchored under the Ambassador Bridge while crew men stayed aboard to protect owner interests.

Flood Debris Delays New Highway 63 Bridge Work

Debris from Indiana and Illinois riverside floods has damaged the center span supports of the Highway 63 bridge over the Wabash. About 150 feet of temporary work bridge was washed away, and most of the remaining structure must be rebuilt. Officials predict a delay of at least 10 days, with the possibility of longer disruption before construction can resume.

Plaza North shopping center planned on Fort Harrison site

D C Johnson of Newlin Johnson Development announced plans for a 2.5 million shopping center on a 30 acre tract at Fort Harrison Road and Lafayette Avenue. The Plaza North complex will feature two 600 foot deep one story buildings, a bank, service station, air conditioned fire proof design, and parking for about 1000 cars with major tenants negotiating leases.

Cayuga Airman Injured in Taipei Collision

A U S airman was killed and two others injured in Taipei Formosa when a taxi collided with a truck. The dead man's identity was withheld pending next of kin notification. Injured are Jack E. Bennett 20 Cayuga Indiana and Jerry N. Metcalf 24 Tulsa Oklahoma. They are hospitalized for observation.
