Decision Expected On Tuesday In Viet Nam Talks

Washington officials say a surface to air missile may have downed an American F4C Phantom over North Viet Nam as policy talks at the White House continue. President Johnson and aides withheld comment while Vice President Humphrey hinting at possible decisions by Tuesday night. Admiral Sharp said Viet Cong strength has risen in six months.

Viet Cong Stepping Up Attacks Near Saigon

In Saigon, Viet Cong guerrillas stepped up harassment within 25 miles of the capital over the weekend. US Marines reported two killed and six captured with light ground action elsewhere as air strikes continued across North and South Vietnam.

Mayor Reluctantly Signs Pay Bill

Mayor Ralph Tucker signed a measure providing a 240 annual pay boost for the city 250 police and firemen, done with reluctance. The ordinance passed unanimously July 13, replacing a heavier insurance package and sparking vetoes over discrimination and scope. Provisions will be in the 1966 city budget.

Hoosier to pilot X-15 rocket plane at Edwards AFB

Air Force Capt. William J. Knight, 35, of Noblesville Indiana, and William H. Dana, 34, a NASA pilot engineer, will start flying the X-15 rocket plane this fall at Edwards Air Force Base. The two will be the 10th and 11th men to pilot the X-15, which has world records of 4 014 miles per hour and 354 000 feet.
