SEATO Sea Dog exercise jets toward South China Sea

A 30-ship SEATO fleet including aircraft carriers destroyers and submarines sails toward the South China Sea for Exercise Sea Dog to test SEATO’s ability to deliver reinforcements to Bangkok under wartime conditions. Break Windows At Scott School Over Weekend

Thirteen windows were broken at Sarah Scott Junior High School during a weekend intrusion. Assistant principal James Cummings said the principal’s office was ransacked and two vending machines were vandalized, with a double faced hall clock smashed. An anonymous caller reported two boys throwing rocks at windows around midnight Saturday and 2 a.m. Sunday. A second informant said six youths were seen inside the school at noon Sunday.

John C Cooper Trial Date Set in City Court

John C. Cooper 21 of 827 N 6 St pleaded not guilty to indecent exposure and disorderly conduct in City Court. Trial set for July 19 after he allegedly forced entry into a teenage girl’s residence and acted improperly. Cooper released on $500 bond.

Clinton appoints William L. Dunlop as patrolman

Clinton Indiana names William L. Dunlop 27 of 334 North Main Street to the police department replacing retiree Harry Snoddy. A Clinton High School graduate and lifelong resident, Dunlop began duty as a patrolman Sunday morning.

Shriners Open 93rd Convention With Parades Planned

More than 100000 red fezzed Shriners and families attend the 93rd convention of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. The event features two parades, one Tuesday and one Thursday, with about 25000 expected to march. Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, a Zuhrah Temple noble from Minneapolis, is slated as grand marshal for the Tuesday parade. Siberia’s Lake Baikal holds nearly as much water as all the Great Lakes combined.

McNamara Sees Slow Progress in Vietnam Pacification

Secretary Robert McNamara observed slow pacification progress in Vietnam’s delta but noted improvements in civilian agency reorganization under military control. He said ground and air operations had improved since his October visit as forces targeted Hanoi area missiles and Dong Ha airstrip amid ongoing shelling and raids. General Westmoreland reportedly sought 100,000 more troops to reinforce 466,000 already in Vietnam.

Hoosier Dies in Plane Crash Near Tomah Wisconsin

Rus Sell Wells 67 of Fort Wayne Indiana died when a single engine plane crashed after takeoff from a Tomah area airport. Pilot John E. Rorick 48 and Rickey J. Boyhan 17 of Fort Wayne were injured as the plane stalled clipped a power line and plunged into a ditch during an overnight stop en route to Rice Lake Wisconsin for a fishing trip.

Tragedy Strikes Family in Middle River Garden Accident

In Middle River Maryland Douglas Alt used an electric worm probe. His three year old son Dougal grabbed the 24 inch steel probe and was electrocuted as the father held the wooden handle. Police said mother and other relatives witnessed the incident on the wet lawn of the family home.

Ex-Candidate Woodrow Jones Found Dead at Home

The body of Woodrow Wilson Jones, 51, a former Democratic mayoral hopeful, was found in his apartment at 417 Wabash Ave by friend Glen Borsman about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Police say he died of natural causes and he was pronounced dead at St. Anthony Hospital. Survivors include two sisters, Margaret Michael of Terre Haute and Lottie Strain of Seelyville. funeral arrangements are pending.
