Northern Indiana Public Service Company ordered gas curtailments amid forecasts of zero highs and bitter cold. The move targets 2,500 industrial customers and could idly as many as 40,000 Lake County workers, with US Steel employment impacts and no residential reductions planned.
Vigo County Sheriff Ted G. Melvin warns that a one third cut to the Law Enforcement Academy funding threatens basic and in service training for Indiana police, with court costs being debated as the funding source. He urges a penal code amendment to preserve fees for the criminal justice system. Melvin also seeks six additional deputies and raises for staff as pension and cost concerns loom.
Increasing cloudiness tonight brings a cold period with possible snow tonight and Friday. Lows tonight 5 to 10 above, highs Friday in the upper teens to low 20s. Extended outlook calls for very cold weather Saturday through Monday with lows from 10 to 15 below, around zero Monday.
Drifting snow and ice covered roads created hazardous travel as winds up to 45 mph produced high drifts in rural areas. Vigo Clay and Sullivan counties closed all area schools with plans to reopen Friday if conditions improve, as gas cutbacks and heating equipment constraints disrupted several schools and industries.
The Terre Haute Deanery Board of Education approved a five year plan for Schulte High School to redefine curriculum and involve community resources. The plan forecasts raising 800000 to 1500000 beyond tuition and parish subsidies to fund the changes.
Clay County Sheriff Wayne E. Lucas accuses Brazil Police Chief Mose E. Marks of politically motivated action when revoking the county's authority to operate a radio control point at the Clay County Jail. The dispute centers on reserve deputy status and shared radio use, with Lucas seeking FCC backup and Civil Defense radio activation.
President Carter narrowly avoided a fall on a small patch of ice outside the White House as he prepared to depart for the Justice Department ceremony for Attorney General Griffin Bell. White House salting had kept most walks clear.
A series of blasts aboard the Exxon San Francisco at the Baytown refinery injured 17 and left four missing as a heating oil spill and fire erupted. The tug Nathan B sank after starting engines near the dock, while the CVS Brilliance crewman was also reported missing. About 45 people were evacuated from nearby homes.
