U S Marines launched a six hour helicopter assault 55 miles from the North Viet Nam border. In heavy fighting near Phu Bai they reported 40 Communists killed and 40 weapons captured while government troops near Quang Tri pressed a weeklong hunt, with 344 Viet Cong killed since last Tuesday. The 7th Fleet shelled coastlines to back operations as a Marine task force pursued the Viet Cong, about 400 strong, on a peninsula southeast of the Hue enclave.
A record 2.5 million 1966 auto licenses are expected to be sold in Indiana before the Monday midnight deadline. More than 90 percent of Hoosier vehicle owners have purchased new tags. Ernest R. Bixell of Plymouth, state motor vehicle commissioner, estimated. Drivers not displaying 1966 plates are subject to arrest after midnight, state police said, and the car impounded.

Police identify Merle Duane Wells, 27, of 1661 4th Ave, as the man who set clothing on fire and jumped into it. He claimed the fire burned his feet. fire crews extinguished the blaze and Wells was jailed on a public intoxication complaint. In City Court, Judge Pro Tem Robert Wallace sentenced Wells to 180 days at the penal farm and fined $30 after he admitted drinking two and a half pints of wine. Mrs. Wells testified to past abuse and that the couple has three children.
In Cu Chi, heavy American artillery from the 1st Battalion 8th Artillery of the 25th Division has fired over 18,000 rounds into Viet Cong areas since late January. The force uses 105mm howitzers reinforced by 8 inch cannons and 175mm guns, targeting camps, roads, and villages with synchronized air and ground bursts to disrupt enemy movements and supply lines.

ESSA 2 joined ESSA 1 to form the world’s first operational space weather network. Launched from Cape Kennedy at 8 58 a m EST atop a Douglas Delta rocket, the satellite will provide global daily coverage and instant cloud images to forecasters in 22 nations. The NASA mission names the satellite environmental survey satellite and plans to activate its cameras after checks.
Senator Birch Bayh testified to the aviation subcommittee urging modifications to aid the CAB in extending carrier service to smaller cities. He proposed temporary CAB certificates for local routes, delaying use it or lose it, and a study of new equipment data to support continued service amid industry growth.
