In Mexico City a tank truck carrying high octane aviation gasoline exploded near a school as pupils left for the day. Eight people died and 70 were burned, many critically, mostly children, with flames spreading along the street and into nearby homes.
Voters in 12 southwest Mississippi counties vote to fill the seat left by John Bell Williams. Candidates include Charles Evers, a civil rights leader, a white Republican, and five white Democrats as federal poll watchers monitor procedures. If no candidate wins a majority, a runoff will be held March 12. Evers, 45, formerly NAACP field secretary after Medgar Evers death.
Indiana Governor Branigin said he will not extend the midnight Thursday deadline for 1968 license plates despite Marion County’s request. Commissioner Ernest Bixel of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles estimated about 60,000 county taxpayers had not purchased plates while branches could process 20,000 daily. The issue centers on the 10-year tax search needed to buy plates.
Board of Trustees plans a formal time schedule for two new high schools after labeling 50 drawings and securing plans in a special session. State Department of Public Instruction will review the Vigo County High School Building Corp plans.
Communist tanks were reported Monday night about 50 miles northwest of Saigon, marking deeper penetration into South Vietnam. An irregular civilian force with U.S. advisers and three tanks moved toward the Cambodian border, with about 400 enemy troops. The U.S. Command said one tank was destroyed by antitank rockets, killing around 30 enemy soldiers.
Indiana Motor Truck Association manager James Nicholas urged Dixie Bee Highway Federation members to push for protecting highway dollars and resisting diversion to other uses. He cited potential $84 million yearly revenue gains and called for upgrades on U S 41 and 63, while noting 711 975 vehicles pay no property tax. Key federation officers were re elected and associated union members praised at the meeting.
