Washington Feb 25 The Senate unanimously approved a resolution extending the present rent control law to April 30 1949 after passing its own 14 month extension. The House had voted to keep the law alive through March and a 31 day measure goes to the Senate Banking Committee.
New Orleans February 25 AP Earl Long won the Louisiana Democratic runoff for governor with 239 198 votes to 135 538 for Sam Houston Jones in 1 065 of 1 878 precincts. The Longs’ return signals a strong political comeback as Huey Long’s family plans to expand pensions and improve roads while Earl promises quieter service to the people.
Clyde K. Page a 34 year old hotel resident admitted burglary and theft from the U S mails after detectives found blue reacting powder on a $5 bill. Held on $1,000 bail for a second degree burglary and detained for federal investigation. He confessed to stealing $19.50 from Iron Workers Local Union No 439 and several pieces of mail.

Local conditions at 6 30 A M show a temperature of 43 degrees with yesterday's high at 49 and the low at 43. Precipitation records indicate .61 inches, shaping a damp start to the day.

In Packwaukee Wisconsin Roy Barton 50 or 51 killed Willard Krinkey 40 then wounded Mrs Barton 48 her daughter Lola Winkler 21 and Jerry Winkler 23 before killing himself Barton chased by a posse was found dead in a woods near the Krinkey home authorities say jealousy was the motive and the ex husband confronted Krinkey over his former wife’s relationship.
In Bartow Florida an elderly husband shot his incurably ill wife in a hospital room and then killed himself. Police said the 69 year old Philip R Athon fired three bullets at his 67 year old wife with a .38 revolver and then shot himself twice in the head as terrified patients watched. Hospital officials fear she will die from her wounds.
Security Council debate on partition of Palestine sparks talk of delays or repeal. Colombia asks for a General Assembly special session, while the U S calls for a five nation study committee. Russia's reaction looms as Gromyko forwards the American speech.
A House Judiciary Subcommittee approved a bill to make lynching a federal offense and send it to the full committee. The measure, part of Truman civil rights aims, would let federal courts try participants and move trials away from the lynching site. Penalties include up to 10 years and 20000 dollars, with officer negligence fines and survivor compensation.
Washington, Feb 25. Rep Mitchell R. Ind., a former commander of navy U S underwater demolition teams, announces a plan to rally World War II veterans behind a substitute for universal military training. He opposes the bill stalled in the House Rules Committee and aims to gather support from about 70 fellow WWII veterans to craft a national defense program.
F W Baker has been named division freight and passenger agent for the Milwaukee Railroad in charge of the Terre Haute division. He succeeds Robert H Harding, now assistant general freight agent in Milwaukee. Baker, born and educated in Kansas City, has 28 years with the Milwaukee Railroad and comes from Aberdeen South Carolina where he served in a similar role. He and Mrs Baker have a daughter who will soon graduate from Baker University Baldwin Kansas.
Minneapolis reports 1300 non strikers plus 1100 AFL Teachers Federation members removed from payrolls for the ongoing strike. Pickets cover 70 elementary, 11 high and equal junior schools with 65,000 pupils kept out of classes as the board and Goslin clash over pay and term cuts. A separate morals case leads to a 25 dollar fine for Margaret Curtis amid a city vice drive ordered by Mayor Tucker and led by Police Chief Reely.
Fire engulfed a two storey home near Burlington Iowa killing seven Waterhouse children aged 16 to 18 months who slept in the upstairs room. Parents escaped in night clothes while three older sons and daughter-in-law fled to safety from a nearby summer kitchen before it burned. The blaze reportedly started when the first floor wood coal stove overheated about 4 am.
Philip J. Silver 63 formerly of 1327 South Center and a longtime Terre Haute merchant died suddenly at 2 AM Wednesday in Miami Florida. He is survived by wife Fay four daughters Reba Silver of Chicago Eugene Nirdlinger Terre Haute Albert Myers Springfield and William Gingold Springfield and three grandchildren. Retail businessman here for 36 years his body will return to Terre Haute Thursday evening for funeral at P J Ryan and Sons Funeral Home.
Vigo County court heard Walter Johnson recount spotting a skull and bones from a shovel lift near Twenty-sixth and Maple while probing the disappearance of Mrs. Lillian Johnson. Parker now on trial for her murder had allegedly indicated the burial site and claimed the bones.
In Prague on February 25 President Eduard Benes yielded to a communist ultimatum and approved Klement Gottwald’s hand picked cabinet, legalizing the police state set up the previous day. The move followed threats of a general strike to force the transfer of power to the leftist government.
In Indianapolis on February 25, United Press reports Judge Luther M. Swygert denied the International Typographical Union's motion to dismiss a government injunction petition. Hearings resume March 3 at 10 a.m. as the Taft-Hartley act's Section 10(1) is upheld and NLRB actions deemed legal.

In Ashland City Tennessee on February 25 the trial of W Ralph Abbott 20 of Arkansas opened with the defense preparing to call witnesses. Abbott is charged with murdering Pierce C Calton 38 of Park Ridge Illinois last Oct 20 after Calton gave him a ride. Evidence showed Abbott resisted and a pistol was recovered. A jury of farmers heard testimony including Calton's widow and his 13 year old son. The state said Abbott claimed self defense and defense lawyers led by H B Means Sr intend acquittal on that basis. Calton and Abbott were natives of Indiana and Arkansas respectively.
