Indianapolis February 23 Old age assistance payments in January were the lowest in 18 years with 36 939 persons receiving benefits a decline of 170 from December The cost of medical care to the aged rose to 401 081 dollars an increase of 6 802 over December despite fewer payments
Two large trucks crashed head on on U S 30 one mile west of Bourbon Indiana. Clinton C Long of an unidentified steel rods truck died along with the other driver believed from Zanesville Ohio. Authorities suggest one truck was on the wrong side and the other driver may have fallen asleep. The lamps shipment was from Chicago.
Attorney H Ralph Johnston spokesman for Terre Haute Transit Company says a petition to the Common Council for mass transportation authority is underway while awaiting Governor George N Craig to sign the bill granting the mayor and council power to issue bus certificates. Indianapolis officials report the bill reached the governor’s desk Tuesday afternoon awaiting signature. the state attorney general’s office reviewed its constitutionality. Mayor Ralph Tucker indicates a special City Council session could be called once the bill is signed.
Former Republican Sen. Sam Johnson of Anderson visited the legislature in Indianapolis on Tuesday and was invited to speak to his former colleagues. The Senate paused five minutes as members remembered his fiery speeches. He quipped that they would take the high road while taxpayers take the low road and Governor Craig would take the toll road.

The second grand jury investigating the death of 24 year old Mrs Willi Mae Clark after an alleged abortion at her home on North Center Street began in the private office of Prosecutor John R. Jett. Her estranged husband Gordon E. Clark 25 is charged with performing the operation and forcing the procedure. The jury began at 9 am Wednesday and several witnesses awaited testimony with a completion likely after 2 or 3 pm.

In Formosa on February 23 the Nationalist air force said it carried out heavy bombing against Communist troops and invasion junk fleets around the Taishan islands for the sixth day. It claimed hitting two sizable ships in pre dawn raids and possibly sinking one, following reports of sweeping victories over a 20 ship Red Chinese convoy in the Taishan area. Washington sources noted possible evacuation of Nanchi island but Matsu and Quemoy bases were not immediately threatened.
