Two Leaders In Serious Discussions In China

President Nixon and Premier Chou En-lai held nearly four hours of talks in Peking as they explored key disagreements between the United States and China. The day ended with a ballet in the Great Hall of the People attended by Mrs. Nixon and Mme Chiang Ching.

Bomb Blasts Kill Four in Belfast and Dungannon Hit

Two separate blasts in Northern Ireland killed four suspected IRA members in a Casltlereigh area car explosion. A Dungannon hotel bombing interrupted a meeting of Northern Ireland parliament opposition members. Security sources eyed possible Protestant involvement and weapons were found at a Falls Road Catholic site.

Democrats File Early Read First in Line

The May 2 primary filing began with a Democratic lead as a crowd gathered before 8 a.m. at the Vigo County absentee office. William Roach filed first for county clerk, followed by William Newton for county auditor and William Bramble for the second district county commissioner seat. By 9 a.m. 13 had signed forms, with Leland Larrison undecided about a run. Other entrants included Bertha Fischer for treasurer Sue Crittenden for school board district one and William Alkire as a Democratic state convention delegate.

District Seeks HUD Certification For WCIEDD

The West Central Indiana Economic Development District requests certification as the area planning agency by filing with HUD after a board resolution. If approved, the district will access federal funding while Vigo County maintains an Area Planning Department and other counties lack planning. The group also backs the Otter Creek Watershed project and plans to hire college interns to study regional landfill feasibility.

Arabs Take Over West German Jet

In Aden, three Arab hijackers seized a West German Lufthansa Boeing 747 with 136 hostages including Joseph P. Kennedy III. They insisted on Palestinian release trials in Cairo and claimed allegiance to an organization in the Gaza Strip. Women and children were released. men and crew remained aboard as negotiations continued.

Schulte H S Faces 237000 Deficit With Plan to Survive

Schulte High School in Terre Haute will stay open despite a 237000 deficit for the current year. The Terre Haute Deanery School Board approved a plan to raise tuition from 175 to 275 for one child and to 425 for two or more, with non Catholic rates doubling to 400. Parish subsidy will fall to 201000 next year and to about 69 percent by 1976 77. The board favors a 50 50 operating cost split with parents and is launching fund raising and recruitment efforts to cover a 30000 annual deficit.

Nees Announces Candidacy for Vigo County Treasurer

Kermit M. Nees, Vigo County farmer and businessman, files for the Democratic nomination in the May 2 primary after completing his second term as County Commissioner. He vows to keep tax payments at local banks and to earn interest on idle county funds. He has led Gra ham Grain for 25 years and holds multiple local leadership roles.

Marshall man killed in Velsical Chemical plant mishap

Virgil G. Rhoads 58 of Marshall Illinois died after a drum filled with a chemical fell on his leg at the Velsicol plant. An autopsy will determine the cause. Rhoads lost much blood and was in shock. He was treated for shock and pronounced dead on arrival at Union Hospital Terre Haute. Plant says no witnesses and notes first fatality in its history. Survived by widow Hilda and three children.
