President Nixon lands in Peking and meets Mao Tse tung and Chou En-lai. He urges the hosts to start a long march toward a world structure of peace and justice. He says progress depends on finding common ground while not in lock step.
President Nixon met Premier Chou En-lai in Peking launching a landmark visit marked by a formal handshake and a brief ceremony under gray skies. Chou spoke of renewed relations and five principles guiding Sino American ties.
Rep. Paul McCloskey of California criticizes President Nixon's China visit while Sen. Edmund Muskie rests in Palm Springs before an L A campaign swing. Muskie says progress possible but hostility spans 25 years.
Bomb blasts in downtown Belfast disrupted rush hour traffic as two masked gunmen planted bombs near Belfast City Hall causing a blaze and ambulance alarms. In Londonderry British troops battled snipers amid what officers call the worst violence since the Bloody Sunday killings with rioters attacked by gas, smoke, and rubber bullets. No injuries were reported, and authorities linked the violence to IRA retaliation claims.
The Terre Haute Deanery School Board will meet in a closed session Monday night to decide on a plan to save Schulte High School. Rising Catholic education costs, enrollment declines, fewer teachers, and shifts in attitudes threaten continued operation. The proposal would cut parish subsidies to about 50 percent and raise tuition toward 350 dollars, prorated by number of children.
Democrat Ed A. Stapleton predicts a loaded ticket as primary filings open Tuesday for eight county offices in Vigo County. The slate includes two county commissioners, county auditor, clerk and treasurer, one joint state senator, three joint state representatives, and three Vigo County School Corp board seats plus 101 precinct committeemen and delegates.

In Saigon during President Nixon's China trip, Viet Minh forces launched at least 50 attacks across South Vietnam. Three Americans and 40 South Vietnamese were killed since sunrise Sunday, with 12 Americans and 54 South Vietnamese wounded and 84 guerrillas killed. U S B52s bombed a major Communist fuel and munitions dump near Khe Sanh as reports note the fighting may reflect broader tensions rather than a full offensive.
Walker says Vigo County must approve a county water and sewer plan by March 14 to qualify for federal funding and to support regional cooperation.
