A predawn explosion damaged the Soviet Embassy in Washington with windows shattered and debris scattered. Police said no injuries and no immediate arrests. FBI and lab crews assisted in the investigation. Some Soviet sources suggested a bomb thrown rather than placed on a sill, but debris survival was limited.
Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara released a 21 page account asserting the Aug 4 1964 naval engagement in international waters involved North Vietnamese torpedo boats striking at U S destroyers Maddox and Turner Joy. Senator J W Fulbright challenged the completeness of the public statement and remained weary from the dispute.
Flames swept through May's Hotel in downtown Knoxville killing at least three elderly men and injuring two others. Det. Robert Chadwell said one resident was unaccounted for and there may be additional bodies among the rubble. Firefighters rescued six people and faced dangerous conditions as the three story brick hotel collapsed on the second floor.
Mostly fair and very cold with a slight warming expected Thursday. Highs near 17 to 27 degrees, lows from zero to 12 above, precipitation under 5 percent tonight. River stage 7.5 feet and falling. Indiana and Illinois regions show similar cold, clear conditions with brisk winds.
The Terre Haute Housing Authority announced an eight year housing program adding 156 elderly units on South Third Street and 44 low income family units on Margaret Avenue. The $2.18 million project, financed by HUD, will be bid under one contract and require 14 months to complete. Land acquisition is the final step before bidding.
The nation’s largest county is San Bernardino County in California, covering 20,119 square miles.
John P. Doran of Cincinnati delivered the main address at Terre Haute s first Postal Forum in Hulman Center. About 200 patrons attended with four Cincinnati officials and Postmaster Frank L. Miklozek. Topics covered included customer relations NIMS zip codes mail transportation and new rates. The session ended after a Q and A period with closing remarks by Robert L. Marine jets resumed raids on Communist positions near the Hue Citadel as U S Marines press a fierce campaign in the city. Lt Gen Robert Cushman Jr says the fight may last weeks with fresh enemy reinforcements and a wall of fire across the Perfume River.
In Brooklyn, Bertram L. Podell a pro Johnson Democrat defeated Melvin Dubin an avowed peace candidate and two others in a special congressional election. Washington sources report little optimism that U Thant Johnson talks will spark a new U S peace initiative. North Vietnam may discuss terms if bombing ends, but U N observers say major gaps persist. Ky and Thang resignations fuel concerns about Saigon's stability and program viability.
