TOKYO February 18 The bald hermit Ichiro Akimoto, 60, says he has 2 100 applicants for a wife and is torn between a 25 year old with half a million yen and a 19 year old geisha. He plans 20 000 yen for his wife after marriage and 3 000 yen to invest in her business, plus 2 000 yen monthly living expenses. He may include a sewing machine and a bicycle.
John A. Costello was elected prime minister of Eire after parliament rejected Eamon De Valera’s bid for re election. De Valera, 70, born in New York, headed government since 1932 and won only four opposition votes in his bid. Costello, a 56 year old Dublin lawyer, was backed by five opposition parties. The office pays £3,000 yearly.
A blaze in an La Porte apartment killed four people including 13 year old Phyllis Masterson and 3 year old Bonnie Lou Wolfenberger. Eight year old Gerald Wolfenbarger died later in hospital. Mrs Velma Masterson 26 and her son Randall Maulbatch 41 remained in serious condition. Police say kerosene sparked the fire while Mrs Masterson tried to light a stove.
Fog blanketed parts of four states, reducing visibility to quarter to half a mile. Chicago Airport halted landings as heavy moisture condensed at night. Rockford reported severe fog, delaying trains and hindering taxis. Officials said such spring fogs are common and clear with sunrise.
Ten Arabs died and 78 wounded in Tripoli riots against British forces after the arrest of Aly Fekky Hassan of the Kotla party. Eight Brits were wounded. Police failed to break up a large demonstration and tear gas was used before order was restored. Three civilians were killed including an Italian and a Jew.
In Chicago on February 18 a jury of mostly parents began hearing evidence in the Lang case. Howard Lang, 13, is accused of killing his 7-year-old playmate Lonnie Fellick in a forest preserve last October 18. Gerald Michalak, age 9, testified he held Lonnie while Lang stabbed him and crushed his skull with a rock. Lang said Lonnie called him bad and threatened to tell his mother about a $10 theft.
Temperature readings show 34 at 6:30 am with 59 as yesterday's high and 33 the previous night. Sunrise occurs at 6:39 and sunset at 5:30. River stage stands at 6.1 feet and rising. Local conditions report a clear start with cool morning temperatures.
