In Belfast and Londonderry militants killed a part time Ulster Defense Regiment member Thomas Callaghan and a British soldier, raising Northern Ireland’s death toll to at least 245 in 2% years of sectarian violence. A sniper wounded a paratrooper and a tire depot was bombed with no casualties. A 40 pound suitcase bomb on the ferry Duke of Argyll was defused before arrival and offices of British Caledonian Airways were destroyed by a later blast.

Indiana governor signs 40 bills into law in 1972 session
Governor Whitcomb signed 40 measures including negotiated railroad crew limits and a habitual offender rule. The crew bill allows talks to reduce crews below 1937 standards with five men on most trains and an extra brakeman on 70 car trains. The habitual offender law lets courts revoke licenses for up to 10 years for repeat offenses, taking effect September 1. An environmental management bill creates a state board with health officials, industry, local agencies and the public to set policy and oversee air and water programs.
