Police filed a murder charge against Loren F. Schofield, 27, a Wheaton teacher and elementary school basketball coach, after he allegedly stabbed a fifth grade pupil to death and dumped her body in a ditch. He reportedly underwent lie detector tests and confessed in the end.
A 13 year old Donna Reed, student at Cornell Elementary, was found shot in a South Side basement after her mother reported her missing Monday night. Police say investigation follows a grim pattern as authorities reveal multiple linked cases in Illinois.
The government seeks $5 million to launch Rural Community Development Service, a new planning agency targeting rural America. President Johnson asks Congress to fund operations in all 50 states to create hundreds of rural planning districts and foster local problem solving and joint planning between rural and urban residents.
Secretary McNamara testifies to Senate that the United States will not wall itself in enclaves nor seek to crush Ho Chi Minh's regime. He rejects nuclear options in South Vietnam, cites a Viet Cong morale toll from intensified actions, and notes Communist buildup persists.

The FBI’s Leo E. Ford, senior resident agent in Terre Haute, was named one of the community’s top law enforcement officers during the Exchange Club’s Crime Prevention Week at Hulman Center. Ford, 44, described as compact and 175 pounds, received special recognition for his work.
The Weather By U S Weather Bureau reports river stage 3.9 ft and local conditions with temperatures from 37 high yesterday to 21 low last night. Forecast for Terre Haute warns generally fair today with increasing clouds and possible light rain tomorrow. highs in mid 30s and lows in low 20s. Indiana expects fair weather tonight with mid to upper 30s Wednesday. Illinois sees increasing clouds with possible rain and snow in the extreme south. A hard freeze ended a period of milder weather in Indiana. Temperatures will fall to the 30s with a chance of light rain Wednesday, possibly mixed with snow in the north. A shift to light snow is forecast for the rest of the state Wednesday night with flurries Thursday in northern areas. The thaw prevented heavy snow accumulations, with depths over the state mostly under an inch.

Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey arrived in Karachi promising the United States will intensify efforts to achieve peace in Southeast Asia through negotiation. Washington AP reports Rep. Albert Thomas of Texas, 67, longtime Democratic congressman from Houston and Nacogdoches native, died at his Washington home after a battle with cancer. A 15-term House veteran since 1937, he was a Rice University graduate with a UT law degree and a World War I veteran, survived by wife and two daughters Mrs. Edward A. Lasater and Lera.
Indiana State University will receive a $2.6 million Department of Housing and Urban Development College Housing Loan to fund two fifteen story residence halls for 1,152 students, starting in May 1967 pending final review. Senators Vance Hartke and Birch Bayh announced the loan on Tuesday. Kenneth Moulton said construction should begin in May, with the first floor kitchens and dining areas in each tower and separate living quarters for men and women on the upper seven floors. Women will be served by elevators. men will not have access to the top floors. Continued on Page 11.
