United States and Nationalist China approve defense treaty

The Senate approved a defense treaty with Nationalist China by 64 to 6, pledging US support for Formosa. The pact covers Formosa and the Pescadores and is permanent, unlike a prior temporary authorization. Six senators opposed, including Chavez Gore Kefauver Lehman Langer Morse. The action follows redeployment on the Tachens and evacuation of civilians from Yushan and Pishan islands. Continued on Page 2.

Three Remain In Tachen Island Evacuation

On February 10 a U S Navy spokesman reported that three civilians stayed behind during the evacuation of the Tachen Islands and a 10 year food supply was left for them One elderly couple an 80 year old and an older man refused to evacuate saying they wished to end their lives in their ancestral homes

Withdrawal on Tachens advances as Nationalists push refugees to Formosa

Troops fired on U S transports amid rain while civilians fled to Formosa. Nationalist forces blasted extensive cave works on the Tachens as they withdrew, with 7th Fleet ships guarding the East China Sea and jets overhead. Civilians had already been removed or were en route.

Crushed by Car in Front Seat Death in Evanston Driveway

James M. Bennan, 44, was fatally crushed when his car rolled forward after he stepped to the front and clung to the vehicle as his wife Elizabeth Bennan, 39, sat inside. The car moved about 70 feet, struck a parked car, and Bennan died at the scene. he owned an electric company in Bellwood.

Churchill Sets Conditions for Meeting Bulganin in Four Power Talks

Obedient couple dies within minutes of each other in Foggia

In Foggia Italy on February 10 Michele V Erario and his wife Maria both suffered heart attacks. Michele urged Maria to follow him and died minutes later. Maria died eight minutes afterward. The couple had been married twenty years.

Near Zero Cold To Hit Indiana Tonight

The Weather Bureau warned of a cold wave with temperatures plunging to near zero in Indiana tonight. Upstate readings would drop from highs near 58 Wednesday to lows of 10 to 15, with up to four inches of snow forecast in northern areas. Snow, fog, and slippery roads were reported in several counties as rain shifts to snow and a clearing trend follows Friday.

Soviet atomic car risks gamma ray exposure in test claim
