Bus Driver Survives Blizzard to Save 16 Passengers
In a Wyoming style blizzard near Tucumcari New Mexico bus driver John Herron 38 battled waist high snow and 10 below zero for 21 hours to reach help and save 16 passengers. He collapsed near a service station at Glenrio but was rescued and later hospitalized for snowblindness frostbite and exhaustion. Passengers including Henrietta Roosevelt and Laura OToole recalled prayers and Herrons efforts to keep heaters running and spirits up with jokes as snowplows finally broke through.
